Calatagan Celebrates National Dental Month

Program: Health And Nutrition

The E. Zobel Foundation, in partnership with Unilever Philippines, U.P. Pahinungod and the Department of Education Calatagan District, recently celebrated the National Dental Month with the theme “Ngiting Matatamis, Ngiping Malinis, Dala ay Pag-asa, Tunay na Ligaya” (Sweet Smile, Clean Teeth, Bring Hope and Genuine Happiness).
Various activities were held with an early morning parade within the community as a kick off activity. The parade was participated by schoolchildren clad in costumes in consonance with the theme, parents, Barangay Officials, teachers of Jose Caisip Elementary School and other guests.
Selected beneficiaries of the Five-Year Oral Health Care Program performed a short skit showing the ill-effects of poor dental practices and how to address these problems. Dr. Lulin Luz, head of the Health Missions of U.P. Pahinungod, shared in her message the value of daily toothbrushing especially among the schoolchildren. This was reiterated by other guest from the Local Government of Calatagan, Dr. Robert Turno.
The most awaited moment of the program was the awarding of the winners in the Poster and Slogan Making Contest. They received a bagful of school supplies as their prized. All entries were mounted in an exhibit for public viewing.
Two beneficiaries in grade 2 were also chosen Bulilit Ngiting Kay Ganda for their healthy set of teeth and for wearing the best smile.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the distribution of dental kits to all the pupils and teachers which contained tootbrush, towel, and a Close-Up toothpaste courtesy of Unilever Philippines through Kabisig ng Kalahi, another partner organization of the E. Zobel Foundation in various social welfare projects.
The Dental Health Month celebration is a support activity to the Five-year Oral Health Program being piloted in Calatagan, Batangas. This is a project which promotes the value of oral health care especially among schoolchildren. The major interventions are daily group toothbrushing of schoolchildren supervised by the teachers, regular check up of volunteer dentists coming from U.P. Pahinungod and dental education for pupils and parents.
