DOST-FNRI Trains Calatagan Women in Complementary Food Blend

Program: Special Projects

Following its mandate of transferring the technology of complementary food to local producers for sustainability, the Department of Science and Technology has granted the Calatagan Women’s Circle over a million worth of equipments through its supervising NGO, the E. Zobel Foundation. The equipment grant will help increase the production output of the women from 10 kilos a day using the old disc grinder to 20 kilos using the more mechanical approach. In May 2013, key persons from the DOST-Food and Nutrition Institute (FNRI) facilitated the two-day production training using the new equipments which was attended by the 16 women beneficiaries. The group was also trained in making crunchies, another by-product of the complementary food. The SIGLA crunchies are well-loved by the schoolchildren based on the turnout of orders from the various school canteens in Calatagan, while the complementary food is being use to fortify the meals cook daily in the different schools and day care centers with on-going supplemental feeding program.
