CALATAGAN NEW GENERATION OF HAT MAKERS

Program: Special Projects

The E. Zobel Foundation, in its effort to promote indigenous arts and crafts among the youth, has organized a hat making training on April 16-17, 2013 at the EZF Garden attended by some high school and college students. Mang Ben, a known hat maker in Calatagan, who made the indigenous hats of the Ms. Earth candidates, patiently shared his skill to the 12 young participants as he taught them the rudiments of hat making. During the training, he demonstrated carefully the art of taking away the coconut stalk and leaves and then forming a circle which will become the base for the hat. He then continued by teaching the participants proper weaving techniques and shaping to eventually arrive at a finely woven hat. At the end of the two-day training, all the participants was able to come up with their own coconut hats and had verbalized that they will practice more to polish their newly-acquired skills.
